The Erie County Association of School Boards has presented the Diana R. Miller Award to Maryellen Kloss, President of the Clarence Board of Education since 2014, and board member since 2005.
Mrs. Kloss has served on the ECASB Executive Board and Budget/Finance/Program Team.
“Maryellen’s calm demeanor, command of board procedures, and extensive knowledge of the community make her a natural leader,” said Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Hicks. “Maryellen was a trustee when the Board of Education created a recognition ceremony that honored students for their participation in extracurricular clubs and other non-academic pursuits. The ceremony has become a highlight of the end-of-year celebrations at Clarence. Maryellen was a founding board member of the Academy of Business and Finance at Clarence High School, which provides a sequence of business education courses with national accreditation, and is now a thriving program. Maryellen helped facilitate the development of the Clarence Nature Center as a science education venue for Clarence students.
“Maryellen was instrumental in the creation of a cultural exchange program with Hexi, China. Chinese teachers visit Clarence annually for approximately 10 weeks in order to learn about educational practices. The Chinese teachers also offer Chinese language classes at the high school level. Students and faculty from Clarence also visited China during the exchange.
“Maryellen’s leadership and expertise were needed during a very public debate on the issue of selection classification for middle school students participating in athletics, discussion on a gender identity policy and during a highly charged budget development process four years ago. In all instances, Maryellen was able to clearly communicate the issues, intelligently address concerns, and lead the district to successful solutions.”
Mrs. Kloss also served as president and vice president of the Clarence Center Elementary School PTO and was a member of the school improvement team for Clarence Center Elementary and Clarence Middle School.
As PTO president, she began the new family ice cream social and organized the distribution of welcome bags to new families. She also helped to start a new character education program that has been in place since the 2003-04 school year. Mrs. Kloss also served on the board of the Clarence High School Football Boosters and the Clarence High School Wrestling Boosters. She also served on the Executive Board of the Academy of Business and Finance, was a Special Education Parent Teacher Association committee member from 1999-2004, and has been a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee since 2002.
